Wangara Industrial Extension Traffic Modelling

Wednesday, 3rd Dec 2014

Transcore was commissioned by Linc Property Pty Ltd to undertake Paramics micro-simulation modelling for the Wangara Industrial Extension Project on Ocean Reef Road, in the vicinity of the existing signalised intersection of Ocean Reef Drive / Sydney Road / Mirrabooka Avenue. Two access options on Ocean Reef Road were assessed for the project:

  • Option 1: Four-way signalised intersection on Ocean Reef Road approximately 520m west of the existing Ocean Reef Road / Sydney Road intersection, providing direct access to/from the proposed industrial development north and south of Ocean Reef Road; and,
  • Option 2: A stop controlled T-junction connecting the industrial development north of Ocean Reef Road in approximately the same location as the Option 1 four- way traffic signals intersection. Industrial development south of Ocean Reef Road was assumed to connect to Mirrabooka Avenue and access Ocean Reef Road via the existing signalised intersection of Ocean Reef Road / Sydney Road / Mirrabooka Avenue intersection.

Paramics microsimulation modelling was used to compare the operation of the two options including the consideration of ‘Level of Service’ and the impact of the two options on operation of the existing Ocean Reef Road / Sydney Road / Mirrabooka Avenue signalised intersection. A supporting Technical Note was produced which outlined the modelling methodology and calibration process, the assessment of the two modelling options and commentary on safety considerations and concluded that Option 1 is the only option that will work satisfactorily with little or no impact on the operation of the existing signalised intersection of Ocean Reef Road, Sydney Road and Mirrabooka Avenue.

The following video shows the Paramics model in operation for Option 1 during the PM peak hour, to illustrate how traffic can potentially flow within and around the modelled study area in future.
